Below is a note on the revision as included in the rulebook.

AUTHOR’S NOTE ON “REVISED EDITION”

I began designing and writing Beyond the Threshold Fantasy Roleplaying Game in October 2020, launched the playtest campaign on September 7, 2021, released the game on August 31, 2022, and debuted it with convention game sessions at Gary Con XV on March 23, 2023.  I am writing this note on January 29, 2024.

This “Revised Edition” is the culmination of over three years of creating, testing, and editing and is presented here as a more complete version of my vision for Beyond the Threshold.  The core mechanics and feel of the game remain unchanged from the original edition (which itself was corrected periodically through updated “printings”).

I have implemented a few rule modifications to streamline gameplay.  Character creation is made more efficient, and character sheets simplified, by eliminating True Attribute Scores, Adjusted Attribute Scores, and ancestral attribute bonuses and penalties.  The dying mechanic is altered by making dying a persistent effect.  The pace of combat turns at higher levels is quickened by eliminating third actions.  Various rules and text have been cleaned up for consistency and clarity.

Most of the changes, however, are not fixes to rules but rather new or expanded content.  Herein lie new and revised archetypal feats and skills, new and expanded tables for generating treasure and loot, a multitude of additional weapon and armor options including more monk weapons, a table to generate random traps, a table to generate a cynocephalus’s head, the introduction of the ninja rogue subtype, and more.

Finally, I hope readers find this edition more visually appealing thanks to user-friendlier font and the inclusion of 15 new illustrations.

As always, take the parts you like and toss the rest.  Happy gaming!
