Beyond the Threshold RPG

You have heard the call to adventure. The hero path lies before you. Perhaps it leads into the thick forest beyond the tree line, into the mouth of the cave beyond the light of day, into open water beyond the horizon, beyond the places where the road ends, beyond the edges of the map. Step beyond…

How does the game work?

As with other tabletop RPGs, Beyond the Threshold Fantasy Roleplaying Game requires a gamemaster (referred to as the “Mentor”) and a group of players. Players each create a character and control that character’s decisions and actions. Success or failure of actions is determined by rolling a percentile die (d%) and a ten-sided die (d10) (collectively “d100”) to make attribute rolls, skill rolls, and save rolls. A roll is successful if the result is less than or equal to the character’s applicable attribute, skill, or save score. In combat, ten-sided dice (d10) and five-sided dice (d5) are used to roll damage. No other dice are needed to play the game. The Mentor may determine that a character has a situational advantage (a “boon”) or a situational disadvantage (a “bane”). Each boon adds a d10 (“boon die”) to the the player’s dice pool and the result is subtracted from the d100 roll, thus making success more likely. Each bane adds a d10 (“bane die”) to the player’s dice pool and the result is added to the d100 roll, thus making success less likely.

Has the game been playtested?

Yes! The author/designer spent over two years developing the game and playtested it thoroughly before release, including by running a weekly campaign using the system. That campaign had been running for over a year by the time the game was released and ran for almost two years. A second campaign is now underway. In addition, the game has been played in convention settings at such events as Gary Con and Gen Con.

A “Revised Edition” to streamline rules and add additional content was released February 2024.

As needed, Frequently Asked Questions, errata, and rules clarifications will be added to this website.

Are character sheets provided?

Yes! Fillable PDF character sheets with logic to automatically calculate scores are available for free download. Character sheets are specific to archetype.

Will additional content be released?
